LOUIS VUITTON ONTHEGO MM REVIEW

The Louis Vuitton Onthego MM tote bag (the medium size) was finally released in the United States! In addition, while it was originally only available in the giant monogram canvas, it has recently been released in some very beautiful epi leather colors. Since I selected the giant monogram canvas version, this blog post is tailored to that print.

SIZE, STRUCTURE, AND DETAILS

The Louis Vuitton Onthego MM measures 13.4 inches in length x 10.2 inches in height x 5.1 inches in width. In comparison, its bigger sister, the Onthego GM, measures 16.14 inches in length x 13.39 inches in height x 7.48 inches in width.

For an everyday use bag, I believe the MM size to be a better choice. In addition, since the exterior of the Onthego MM is made entirely of canvas, it weighs slightly less than two pounds. This means the bag itself is not overly heavy, which makes it a really comfortable carry!

My Onthego MM has no quality issues whatsoever. For example, the stitching is flawless, and the canvas is perfectly aligned.

EXTERIOR OF THE ONTHEGO MM

The exterior of the Onthego MM is inspiring. First, the canvas feels considerably thicker than most of my other Louis Vuitton pieces (for instance the Neverfull MM).

CONTRASTING CANVAS

The bag is also aesthetically striking as both the front and back panels of the bag are composed of the monogram giant motif (aka giant monogram), with a twist. Specifically, one front panel has the classic monogram giant design, whereas the other side is reverse monogram giant canvas of course! This type of interesting contrast is continued to the side panels of the bag as one side panel has the regular-size classic monogram print, whereas the opposing side as the regular-size reverse monogram canvas.

This means that when I am looking at the front of my bag, the reverse monogram giant motif is facing me and the side panel to the right is composed of regular-sized reverse monogram canvas. As I continue to turn the bag to the right, the back panel has the classic monogram giant canvas. Finally, as I turn my bag to the right again, the final side panel has the regular-size classic monogram canvas. I love the contrast of the four different styles!

The front and back panels are also stitched together and form a seam at the bottom of the bag.

HARDWARE & TABS

The bag is adorned with beautiful gold-tone hardware, but what I found striking was that the front/back panels and side panels have an additional corner tab detail wherein a tab of MINI-monogram canvas is folded over the panels. In addition, the color of the mini-monogram canvas tab contrasts with the canvas on the front panel. For example, if the front panel has the reverse monogram giant print, the corresponding tab is fashioned with the classic mini-monogram canvas. This really makes the tabs stand out! Additionally, the lovely tabs are also pierced by a mounded rivet that is stamped with “Louis Vuitton”, as well as a quatrefoil design. I can’t believe they can stamp so much information on a tiny rivet with such amazing detail! Additionally, the edges of the tabs are glazed for protection.

DUAL HANDLES

As if the above variety was not enough, the Onthego MM also has two different types of handles. First, there are shorter rolled (Toron) handles for hand-carry. Additionally, these short handles are crafted in the mini-monogram motif, with one side having the classic mini-monogram pattern and the other sporting the reverse mini-monogram! To boot, the monogram pattern on the handles contrasts with the canvas where it attaches to the front panel of the bag. The short handles also have a drop of approximately 4.5 inches. In addition, the edges of the short handles are sealed with thick glazing. Luckily, the glazing is perfect and looks like it will last a long time without cracking or peeling. The short handles are attached to the front panels of the bag with padded chaps that are fashioned in the same mini-monogram pattern as the corresponding handle.

Next, the Onthego MM has luxuriously long shoulder straps that have a drop of 9.4 inches, as well as glazing on the edges. Moreover, each of the long straps matches the pattern of the short handle on the same side. The straps are also attached to the inside of the bag by gold-color hardware and matching tabs.

The mini-monogram handles up against the monogram giant has me lusting over this bag!

Finally, the long straps are easily folded inside of the bag, so you can keep them hidden when you want to use the hand-carry handles.

COMFORT

Thankfully, this bag is comfortable when carried on the crook of the arm or over the shoulder. The rolled hand-carry handles are smooth and do not dig into your arm. In addition, the shoulder straps are nice and long. As such, the bag sits easily against the side when you toss it over your shoulder. This makes the bag extremely comfortable when you overload it and run out the door.

INTERIOR OF LOUIS VUITTON’S ONTHEGO MM

DESCRIPTION

The inside of the bag is covered with a red textile lining. The bag lacks a top zip, but it’s gold-colored D-ring latch is still pretty awesome at keeping the contents secure.

There is one large compartment that has a flat zippered pocket, as well as a large separate double pocket. The large compartment includes a leather tab sewn into the side seam that is stamped with the Louis Vuitton symbol and “Made in U.S.A.” In addition, at the top of the main compartment is a leather label that is stamped with the “Louis Vuitton Paris”/Trademark symbol. If you are looking for the date code, it is sewn inside the zippered pocket.

WHAT CAN IT HOLD

Turning to the zippered pocket, it is spacious enough to hold a phone and keys! Moreover, the compartments of the double pocket are large enough to hold a card case and a 6-ring key holder.

Undoubtedly, you will not run out of space! In the main compartment, I have a wallet, my Louis Vuitton Small Ring Agenda, Mini Pochette Accessories, travel perfume, iPad, ear pods, sunglasses, and a few files. Needless to say, I have room to spare.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE OF THE LOUIS VUITTON ONTHEGO MM

The size, quality, and variety offered by the Louis Vuitton’s Onthego MM makes it an amazing luxury tote. It is expensive, but so worth it. The bag is large and extremely trendy; however, I honestly do not think it is a trend that will end anytime soon.
